Traditional acne products include topical gels and creams applied to the skin to help manage the breakout of spots and pimples.  

TRADITIONAL ACNE GELS AND CREAMS  

Topical formulations, such as acne creams or gels, typically have three main actions: 1) decreasing the amount of bacteria that cause acne; 2) decreasing inflammation; and 3) clearing clogged pores. 

One of the popularly used ingredients for acne formulation is salicylic acid, which has anti-inflammatory action but also can inhibit the assembly of intact stratum corneum, resulting in skin exfoliating, peeling and drying. This explains why skin-drying and peeling adverse effects occur with salicylic acid-based topical acne formulations. In addition to being uncomfortable, skin peeling disturbs the natural microbiome's habitats, which are necessary for maintaining healthy skin. 

Another popular ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, a well-known free radical generator. This ingredient works effectively by generating free radicals to attack bacteria in acne. Unfortunately, free radicals attack not only bad bacteria, but also tissue and good bacteria, required for balance skin microbiome. Therefore, benzoyl peroxide may cause some temporary hyperpigmentation. Too much uses can also upset the skin microbiome. 

Another ingredient for acne problems is vitamin A or retinoids in various forms. The use of retinoid formulation can be in the form of oral or topical. For oral, careful monitoring by a doctor is absolutely required because retinoid side effects are quite harmful.
